Alaska Cruise Season 2026: What's New

Alaska's cruise season runs from May to September, and 2026 is shaping up to be the biggest yet. Here's everything you need to know about cruising to the Last Frontier this year.

New Ships in Alaska

Royal Caribbean — Quantum of the Seas

After years in Asia-Pacific, Quantum repositions to Seattle for Alaska sailings. Her North Star observation pod will offer unmatched glacier viewing.

Holland America — Rotterdam

Holland America has been sailing Alaska longer than anyone, and the Rotterdam brings their latest Pinnacle-class refinements to 7-night Inside Passage itineraries from Vancouver.

Norwegian — Norwegian Bliss

Purpose-built for Alaska with observation lounges and wrap-around outdoor decks. The race track won't be much use in Juneau, but the thermal spa is perfect after a glacier trek.

Must-See Ports

Juneau

Alaska's capital is only accessible by sea or air — no roads lead here. Must-dos include the Mendenhall Glacier, whale watching, and the Red Dog Saloon.

Skagway

Step back into Gold Rush history on this tiny town's boardwalk-lined main street. The White Pass & Yukon Route railway is one of the most scenic train rides on earth.

Ketchikan

The "Salmon Capital of the World" is your gateway to totem pole parks, float plane adventures, and some of the best seafood you'll ever eat.

Glacier Bay National Park

Only two ships per day are permitted entry to this UNESCO site. If your itinerary includes it, you're in for a highlight — watching calving glaciers from your balcony is unforgettable.

When to Go

  • May: Longest daylight hours approach, fewer crowds, but temperatures are cooler (7-13°C).
  • June-July: Peak season. Best weather, longest days (18+ hours of light), and highest wildlife activity.
  • August: Slightly warmer water, bears fishing for salmon, and northern lights become possible late month.
  • September: Fall colours, smallest crowds, and best aurora viewing, but some excursions close for the season.

What to Pack

Alaska cruising demands layers. Even in July, glacier-viewing days can drop to near freezing while port days in Ketchikan might hit 20°C. Essentials:

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers (rain is frequent)
  • Binoculars (for wildlife spotting from your balcony)
  • Warm base layers
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Camera with a good zoom lens
