Caribbean vs Mediterranean: Which Cruise Is Right for You?
The two most popular cruise regions compared head-to-head — weather, ports, pricing, food, culture, and which one suits your style.

It's the eternal cruise debate: Caribbean or Mediterranean? Both are exceptional, but they offer fundamentally different experiences. Let's compare them honestly.
The Vibe
Caribbean: Relaxation-first. Think turquoise water, white sand beaches, rum cocktails, and swaying palm trees. Ports are about beach time, snorkelling, and letting go.
Mediterranean: Culture-first. Ancient ruins, world-class museums, cobblestone streets, and extraordinary food. Ports are about exploring, learning, and eating.
Weather
Caribbean: Consistent warmth year-round (26-32°C). Hurricane season runs June-November, with September-October being highest risk. Winter sailings (December-April) offer perfect conditions.
Mediterranean: Seasonal. Summer (June-August) is hot (28-35°C) and crowded. Shoulder seasons (April-May, September-October) are ideal — warm, less crowded, and cheaper. Winter sailings exist but many ports are cool and grey.
Winner: Caribbean for guaranteed warmth. Med for pleasant shoulder-season cruising.
Ports & Excursions
Caribbean: Beach-focused with some cultural gems (Old San Juan, Havana, Cartagena). Excursions lean towards water sports, zip-lining, and beach breaks. Ports can feel commercial — many are purpose-built cruise terminals.
Mediterranean: Extraordinary density of world-class destinations. Barcelona, Rome, Dubrovnik, Santorini, Istanbul — any one of these would be a trip highlight. The downside: limited time in ports that deserve days of exploration.
Winner: Mediterranean, by a wide margin. The ports are the main event.
Food & Dining
Caribbean: Onboard food is the star. Jerk chicken and fresh seafood in port, but dining options are limited in some smaller islands.
Mediterranean: Onboard AND ashore dining is exceptional. Fresh pasta in Amalfi, tapas in Barcelona, souvlaki in Mykonos — port food is a highlight, not an afterthought.
Winner: Mediterranean. Eating your way through southern Europe is a privilege.
Pricing
Caribbean: Generally cheaper. Shorter sailings (3-7 nights) available from Florida. Drinks packages are popular and add up. Excursions are moderate (£30-£100).
Mediterranean: Flights to embarkation ports add cost for UK/US travellers. Sailings tend to be longer (7-14 nights). Excursions are pricier (£50-£200) but often more rewarding.
Winner: Caribbean for budget cruising. Med offers better value for your money if you want cultural enrichment.
The Verdict
Choose the Caribbean if you want: relaxation, beaches, warm weather, shorter/cheaper sailings, and a laid-back atmosphere.
Choose the Mediterranean if you want: cultural immersion, incredible food, historic ports, diverse experiences, and don't mind spending a bit more.
Or better yet — do both. They scratch completely different itches, and a well-rounded cruiser has stamps from both.
